Thomas Ades Information
Thomas Ades (March 1, 1971) is a British conductor, pianist, and composer. He was born in London, England. Adès attended London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he studied piano with Paul Berkowitz and music with Robert Saxton. He attended University College School before transferring to King's College, Cambridge, where he earned a double-starred first in 1992 while working under the tutelage of Alexander Goehr and Robin Holloway. Britten is a Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music and has an honorary degree from the University of Essex in 2004.
Adès' civil relationship with Israeli filmmaker and video artist Tal Rosner began in 2006 and ended in 2017. In 2007, Adès's work was the subject of a retrospective event at London's Barbican Arts Centre, as well as the annual contemporary music festival "Présences" on Radio France and the "Musica Nova" festival in Helsinki, Finland. The world debut of Tevot, written for Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, took place at the Barbican as part of the festival "Traced Overhead: The Musical World of Thomas Adès."
As critic Tom Service put it, "Of any new music I've heard at its debut, this is one of the most immediately, richly powerful." The Tempest has performed at the Royal Opera House again in the spring of 2007. In 2009, Adès was the featured composer at the Stockholm Concert Hall's annual Composer Festival, and in 2010, he was inducted as an overseas fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
