The Roots Information
The Roots is an American hip-hop band started in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1987 by Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson. After performing as Jimmy Fallon's house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon from 2009 to 2014, The Roots are now doing the same thing on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Consistently receiving high praise, The Roots are recognized for their jazzy and varied take on hip-hop that incorporates live musical instruments. On their list of the 25 Best Hip-Hop Groups of All Time, ThoughtCo placed the band at number seven, describing them as "Hip-hop's first legitimate band."
Some Roots members also produce records, act, and appear as guests on other artists' albums and live performances, in addition to their work as musicians in the band. Speculation about a potential huge collaboration between The Roots and Usher began in September 2016 when they supported Usher at a Global Citizen charity event in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The band unveiled End Game, their 17th studio album, in October 2016.
Questlove said in March 2019 that the album had an unreleased J Dilla track, and in June 2021, Black Thought stated that 9th Wonder and Salaam Remi also contributed as producers.
