As a member of the post-hardcore band Before Their Eyes, guitarist/vocalist Landon Tewers started "Vessels" as a side project. Like Before Their Eyes, Vessels was contracted to InVogue Records, where he recorded and produced his debut EP, Wife Beater. Tewers left Before Their Eyes shortly after Wife Beater's release because he recognized Vessels' potential.
After deciding to compose the music without consulting the other band members, he renamed the group "The Plot in You." He brought guitarists Anthony Thoma and Josh Childress, bassist Ethan Yoder, and drummer Cole Worden for live performances. The band announced their signing to Rise Records before the close of 2010, and Tewers later admitted that he had begun writing songs for an album scheduled for release in the first half of 2011.
Supporting A Plea for Purging on their December 2010 "The Mosh PotatTour" were Your Memorial and Within the Ruins, which the band had just recently formed on October 21, 2010. The band would release "Unwelcome" on November 29 and "Miscarriage" on February 24 as promotional songs from their upcoming new album. The band's Facebook page featured a cover of Rob Zombie's "Superbeast" on March 30, the last song they will share before releasing their album.
