The Platters are an American vocal group. The group's current lineup consists of Brittany Michelle Wallace, Jovian K. Ford, Omar Ross, and Lance Bernard Bryant. They are among the most popular vocal ensembles from the early days of rock and roll. Their particular sound links the pre-rock legacy of Tin Pan Alley and the emerging genre. Ralph Bass, an A&R representative for Federal Records, oversaw The Platters when they first came together in Los Angeles in 1952. Herb Reed, Alex Hodge, Cornell Gunter, and Joe Jefferson comprised the first team.
The Penguins, fresh off their #8 song "Earth Angel," sought Ram to handle them because The Platters were a lucrative touring act despite their lack of chart success. Ram could leverage Mercury Records' interest into a 2-for-1 transaction once he had the Penguins in his possession. Ram maintained that Mercury also needed to sign the Platters to sign the Penguins. For the label, The Penguins would never have a hit.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame inducted the group in 1990 and 1998, respectively. The Platters became the first rock and roll band to achieve an album on the Top Ten American charts.
