The OJays Information
The O'Jays, initially composed of Eddie Levert, William Powell, Bill Isles, Walter Lee Williams, and Bobby Massey, are an American R&B group. The band originated from Canton, Ohio, and was founded in 1958. The O'Jays had a modest hit with "Lonely Drifter" in 1963. Still, they took off after being recruited by producers and songwriters Gamble & Huff to the Philadelphia International label in 1972.
With Gamble & Huff, O'Jay led Philadelphia Soul with "Back Stabbers" (1972) and topped the Billboard Hot 100 with "Love Train" (1973). After several further US R&B singles, Both the Vocal Group Hall of Fame (2004) and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame (2013) inducted the O'Jays.
In 2003, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Beyoncé Knowles starred alongside each other in the film The Fighting Temptations. They portrayed three barbers in the movie who sang in perfect harmony and decided to join the local church choir to assist the main characters.
The O'Jays received the 2009 BET Lifetime Achievement Award on June 28, 2009, during the 2009 BET Award Show in the Shrine Auditorium. Don Cornelius presented the award to the group after a performance by Tevin Campbell, Trey Songz, Tyrese Gibson, and Johnny Gill. After accepting their prize, the band shared some stories and jokes with the crowd and played live versions of their greatest hits.
There was an induction ceremony for the O'Jays into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame on August 17, 2013. Two of the O'Jays' songs, "Love Train" (2006) and "For the Love of Money" (2016), have been honored with a place in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
