The Nighthawks Information
The Nighthawks is an American roots and blues music band based in Washington, D.C, founded in 1972. The current lineup of the group includes Mark Wenner (harmonic and vocals), Dan Hovey (lead guitar), Johnny Castle (bass guitar), and Mark Stutso (drums). The Nighthawks released one of its initial albums entitled “Full House” in 1979 on Adelphi Records. This album included guest appearances from Bob Margolin and Pinetop Perkins.
The Nighthawks struggled for many years to stabilize its lineup. After the departure of Jimmy Thackery, several players came and filled the lead guitar spot, including Pete Kanaras, Danny Morris, James Solberg, Warren Haynes, and Jimmy Nalls. Kanaras is recognized as one of the longest-lasting members of the Nighthawks. The band has been featured in the first episode of the second season for “The Wire.”
At the 2009 Traditional Blues/R&B Duo/Group Awards at the Washington Area, Music Awards were awarded to the Nighthawks. The band’s albums entitled “Last Train To Bluesville” won the Acoustic Album of the Year at the 32nd Blues Music Awards in 2011 sponsored by the Blues Foundation. The Nighthawks also signed a contract with Severn Records the same year.
There is a long list of The Nighthawks discography among which, some of the notable albums are Rock’ n’ Roll (1974), Open All Nite (1976), Live at the PsycheDelly (1976), Full House – Jacks & Kings Vol I & II (1982), Ten Years Live (1982), Hard Living (1986), Best of the Nighthawks (1988), and countless other albums as well.
