The Highsteppers Information
In 1976, Highstepper founder and director Kathy Harlan established the group at McCullough High School. Mrs. Harlan transferred to McCullough from Washington Jr. High when the district constructed a second school and the schools were initially split. She created the original Highstepper look, which is still popular after 46 years.
Highstepper's signature precision and technique stem from her training in gymnastics and synchronized swimming. The Highsteppers are the last remaining members of the school's initial McCullough High School class of 1985. Mrs. Harlan created the original uniform, which has mostly stayed the same through the years.
Finding out who will act as her "big sister" is one of the first things a new Highstepper does. New Highsteppers are given the guidance and support they need by being matched with more seasoned Highsteppers. At various points throughout the year, each "big sister" will give her "little sister" a token of affection in the form of a modest present, some of which will be humorous. In contrast, others will be more traditional, such as the towel dancers who perform at football games to warm the cold bleachers.
