The Commodores Information
Commodores, sometimes known simply as the Commodores, are a group that plays funk and soul music in the U.S. While Lionel Richie was a band member, they were at the height of their popularity in the '70s and '80s.
Before signing with Motown in November 1972, after catching the public notice as the Jackson 5's opening act on tour, the group members met in 1968 as undergraduates at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University).
Hits like "Easy," "Three Times a Lady," and "Nightshift" are from the band's ballad catalog, while "Brick House," "Fancy Dancer," "Lady (You Bring Me Up)," and "Too Hot ta Trot" are from their funk-influenced dance music catalog.
The Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame inducted the Commodores. In addition, the band has been awarded one Grammy Award out of nine nominations. Global album sales for the Commodores exceed 70 million.
Walter "Clyde" Orange, James Dean "J.D." Nicholas, William "WAK" King, and their five-piece band The Mean Machine make up the Commodores as of 2020. They are still performing globally at venues such as arenas, theaters, and festivals.
