The Blind Boys of Alabama is a group founded in 1939 that originated from Talladega, Alabama. The band is also known as Clarence Fountain and the Blind Boys of Alabama and The Five Blind Boys of Alabama. The music is classified as traditional black gospel, blues, soul, and gospel. The current lineup consists of Jimmy Carter (vocals), Ricky McKinnie (Vocals, percussion), Ben Moore (vocals), Joey Williams (Vocals, lead guitar), Paul Beasley (vocals), Peter Levin (organ), and Stephen Raynard Ladson (bass). There are many past members for the Blind Boys of Alabama as the band underwent several lineup changes throughout its history.
The Blind Boys of Alabama performed together for the first time in the school chorus at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Deaf and Blind in 1939. The gentlemen shared their early influences: The Soul Stirrers, the Golden Gate Quartet, and The Heavenly Gospel Singers. The Happy Land Jubilee Singers was the earliest version of the band performed for World War II soldiers the first time. The first professional performance by the band was on June 10, 1944.
"I Can See Everybody's Mother But Mine" was the first national hit by The Blind Boys, released in 1949. Some of their other notable hits are Sweet Honey in the Rocks, When I Lost My Mother, God is On the Throne, Can I Get a Witness?, Fix it Jesus Like You Said You Would, Faith Moves Mountains, Oh Lord, and Stand By Me / Marching Up to Zion. The Blind Boys of Alabama won numerous Grammy Awards and Dove Awards throughout their career.
