A pops orchestra is a classical orchestra that also performs well-known popular music and show tunes. In contrast to the more "serious" symphony or philharmonic orchestras that may also be present in a given metropolis, Pops orchestras tend to be organized in larger urban centers.
However, certain symphony orchestras, such as the ones in Detroit, Buffalo, and Kansas City, often perform pops concerts. In contrast, some pops orchestras are mere "lowbrow" guises for the same musicians (for instance, the Boston Pops Orchestra is composed primarily of Boston Symphony Orchestra members).
