Steve Gadd Band Information
Stephen Kendall Gadd (April 9, 1945) is an American session musician, percussionist, and drummer. He was born in Irondequoit, New York. Gadd's first studio appearance was on Gap Mangione's Diana in the Autumn Wind album in 1968. Gadd, Mike Mainieri, Warren Bernhardt, David Spinozza, and Tony Levin founded the jazz fusion band L'Image in 1973, but they didn't last long. Beginning in 1973, he was a regular sideman on albums by jazz greats like Milt Jackson, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Jim Hall, and Hubert Laws for the CTI Records label. Gadd's drum solo at the end of Steely Dan's "Aja," from their jazz-rock album of the same name, released in 1977, has become "the stuff of legend."
From the group's inception in 1983 until his departure in 1987 (to be replaced by Dave Weckl), Gadd was a member of the Manhattan Jazz Quintet. Since then, he has reconnected with the ensemble on multiple occasions. The band has achieved widespread popularity in Japan due to the exclusive release of its albums there. For the entirety of 1991, Gadd was on the road with Paul Simon. Between 1994 and 1996 and between 1997 and 2004, he recorded and toured with Eric Clapton. Gadd went on tour with James Taylor that same year. Beginning in 2014, Gadd has performed in a soul-jazz trio alongside Michael Blicher and Dan Hemmer, both of whom hail from Denmark.
