Stanley Jordan is a jazz guitarist from Chicago, Illinois, known for his guitar playing technique that involves tapping his fingers on the guitar's fretboard with both hands. At the age of six, Jordan started playing the piano, and at eleven, he shifted to guitar. Later on, Jordan started playing in a variety of rock and soul bands. In 1976, he was the winner of an award at the Reno Jazz Festival. Jordan attended Princeton University, where he studied music theory and composition. Bruce Lundvall became president of Blue Note Records in 1985, and Jordan became the first person to be signed to the label.
Magic Touch was the first album by Jordan that sat at number one on Billboard's jazz chart for 51 weeks straight. Jordan's touch technique is known as one of the most advanced forms of two-handed tapping. This technique allowed him to play melody and chords simultaneously. Vigier Guitars built his main guitar in 1984.
Jordan has worked with many notable artists such as Richie Cole, The Dave Matthews Band, Quincy Jones, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Michal Urbaniak, The String Cheese Incident, Phil Lesh, and Umphrey's McGee. He has performed at many jazz festivals such as the Concord Jazz Festival (1985), Kool Jazz Festival (1984), and the Montreux International Jazz Festival (1985). Jordan has also performed on numerous television shows such as The David Letterman Show, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and the Grammy Awards. Some of his notable discographies are Live in New York, Dreams of Peace, Duets with Kevin Eubanks, and Flying Home.
