Spyro Gyra Information
Spyro Gyra is a jazz fusion band. The current lineup consists of Jay Beckenstein, Scott Ambush, Julio Fernández, Lionel Cordew, and Chris Fischer. Before signing with Amherst Records, which re-released Spyro Gyra in 1977 with a new cover, the band released the album on its own. Among its tracks was "Shaker Song," which peaked at no. 99 on Canada's pop chart and #26 on the country's AC chart, in addition to Billboard's Hot 100 at No. 90.
Another drummer changed in 2015, with Lionel Cordew taking over for Pearson. Since their previous album, Vinyl Tap (2019), featured cover versions of songs from the 1960s and 1970s rather than original compositions, it marked a change for the band. After the band had to cancel all of their 2020 tour dates due to the pandemic, they released a music video on YouTube on June 23, 2020. It featured a medley of their early songs, including "Shaker Song," "Catching the Sun," and "Morning Dance," all of which were recorded at home and synced together.
The band started touring again in 2021. The band stated on Facebook on December 19, 2022, that Tom Schuman was planning to relocate to Europe and would perform his last gigs with the group in February 2023. Chris Fischer joined the band in March 2023 as their new keyboardist, according to an announcement made by the band on December 28, 2022.
