So Percussion Information
So Percussion, often styled as So Percussion, is an American percussion quartet that originated from Brooklyn, New York, and is currently based in New York City. The current lineup of the group consists of Jason Treuting, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Eric Cha-Beach. Jenise Treuting suggested the name of the group, Jason Treuting’s sister. So Percussion is well-known for recording and touring internationally and has worked with composers such as Bryce Dessner, Julia Wolfe, Steve Reich, David Lang, Caroline Shaw, Vijay Iyer, Fred Frith, Dan Trueman, Shara Nova, Martin Bresnick, Oscar Bettison, Tristan Perich, Paul Lansky, and Steven Mackey.
So Percussion was initially founded when the members were students of Robert van Sice at the Yale School of Music. The quartet is popular for its use of unusual and exotic instruments in performances and on recordings, such as bowed marimba, aluminum pipes, glockenspiel, and an amplified cactus. The group recorded for Bang on a Can record label Cantaloupe Music.
So Percussion frequently collaborates with many big-name musicians and performers from all across the world, including Buke and Gase, Shara Nova, Dave Douglas, Matmos, The National, Medeski Martin & Wood, Dan Deacon, The Dirty Projectors, Eli Keszler, Emily Johnson, and Ain Gordon.
The group also released many notable studio albums, including Amid the Noise (2006), Where (we) Live (2012), neither Anvil nor Pulley (2013), Bad Mango, Cage 100: Bootleg Series (2012), Drumming Live (2017), and more.
So Percussion won the Bessie Award for Outstanding Musical Composition/Sound Design – 2016, ASCAP John Cage Award – 2009, Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming - 2004, 2006, 2010; and finally International Percussion Competition Luxembourg 2005.
