Slick Rick Information
Richard Martin Lloyd Walters (January 14, 1965) is a British-American record producer and rapper better known as Slick Rick. Rick was born in the southwest London district of Mitcham. His family migrated to the United States in 1976, where they settled in the Bronx’s Baychester area. He attended Fiorello H. Laguardia High School of Music & Art. While he was in high school, Rick met Dana Dane, and after becoming friends, they formed the Kangol Crew. The duo used to perform in small local clubs, parks, and school contests.
Slick Rick began his official career in 1985. He earned initial success in the rap industry after joining Get Fresh Crew of Doug E. Fresh. Slick Rick used the stage name MC Ricky to be featured on the single “The Show.” He later joined Rush Artist Management of Russell Simmons in 1986. Also, he became the third artist to sign to Def Jam Records.
Slick Rick later collaborated with friend DJ Vance Wright, producing his solo debut album “The Great Adventures of Slick Rick.” The album was released in 1988 on Def Jam Records, becoming a breakthrough for Slick Rick and reaching number 1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The album also featured three charting singles: “Teenage Love,” “Hey Young World,” and “Children’s Story.”
Rick was acknowledged on the VH1 Hip Hop Honors show on October 6, 2008. His other notable albums include The Art of Storytelling (1999), Behind Bars (1994), and The Ruler’s Back (1991).
