Slaid Cleaves Information
Slaid Cleaves is an American singer and songwriter who was born in Washington, D.C. He was raised in South Berwick, Maine, and Round Pond, Maine. Cleaves is an alumnus of Tufts University, where he majored in philosophy and English. He currently resides in Austin, Texas. He is known as a full-time touring musician. Cleaves’ musical roots extend back to his days playing in a high school “garage band” and his childhood friend Rod Picott.
Cleaves has brought his endless love for American artists such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Tom Waits, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Woody Guthrie. He released his debut cassette entitled “The Promise” in 1990. He also won the prestigious New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival for his talented performance. The award was previously given to well-known artists such as Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, and Nanci Griffith. His first national album was “No Angel Knows,” which was released on the Rounder-Philo label.
Cleaves released a hit song from his album Broke Down in 2000. The track was of the same name, and it soon entered Americana charts. This hit title song was co-written with one of Cleaves’ childhood friends, Picott. In 2004, he released another album entitled Wishbones. The album brought him greater recognition, and he ended up appearing on the Cold Pizza show by ESPN2.
Cleaves released a collection of songs entitled Unsung, where all the songs were written by other popular singers and songwriters such as Nicole St. Pierre, Adam Carroll, Michael O’Connor, J. J. Baron, and Graham Weber.
