Shemekia Copeland Information
Charon Shemekia Copeland (April 10, 1979) is an American electric blues vocalist born in Harlem, New York. Copeland began singing at a very early age and started performing in public. Her first public performance was at the Cotton Club when she was just ten years old. At the age of 16, Copeland began pursuing her singing career earnestly. She was the opening act for her father on his tour, and it helped Copeland establish her name. She graduated from Teaneck High School in 1997.
In 1998, Copeland signed a record deal contract with Alligator Records. The record issued her debut album entitled “Turn the Heat Up!” the same year followed by a tour to America and Europe. In 2000, Copeland released her second album named “Wicked.” The album featured a duet with one of the Copeland heroes, Ruth Brown. The duet brought significant success for her, and she earned three Blues Music Awards.
Copeland left her previous record label and signed with Telarc International in 2008. She released another album on her new label entitled “Never Going Back,” released in February 2009. The same year, Copeland participated in the Efes Pilsen Blues Festival. She also appeared in the Chicago Blues Festival on June 12, 2011. The other notable albums that she released throughout her career include Turn the Heat Up (1998), Wicked (2000), Talking to Strangers (2002), The Soul Truth (2005), and Outskirts of Love (2015).
