Shai Maestro Information
Shai Maestro (February 5, 1987) is an Israeli jazz pianist. After starting on classical piano at age five, Shai Maestro went on to study at Israel's Thelma Yellin High School of the Performing Arts in Givataim. He attended the Berklee College of Music's Five-Week Summer Performance Program in Boston, where he was offered a scholarship to attend Berklee. Still, he turned it down after winning the National Jazz Ensembles Competition Jazz Signs in 2002 and 2003 and receiving scholarships (2004–2010) from the America–Israel Cultural Fund for jazz piano.
Some weeks later, bassist Avishai Cohen asked him to join his trio with drummer Mark Guiliana. Gently Disturbed (2008), Sensitive Hours (2008), Aurora (2009), and Seven Seas (2011) are four albums he made with the Avishai Cohen Trio, two of which were released on Blue Note. He joined the group on tour. Maestro and his two colleagues recorded the Shai Maestro Trio album in July 2010 for the French label Laborie Jazz.
Their touring schedule included up to eighty shows a year, and they performed alongside bands fronted by the likes of Chick Corea, Tigran Hamasyan, Esperanza Spalding, and Diana Krall. The trio's second album, The Road to Ithaca, was published through Laborie Jazz in 2012. The sequels The Stone Skipper (2016) and Untold Stories (2015) followed. DownBeat, NPR, BBC, and WBGO's The Checkout have all commended the CDs.
