Shabazz Palaces Information
Shabazz Palaces is an American hip-hop duo. The current lineup of the duo consists of Ishmael Butler and Tendai “Baba” Maraire. The duo has been active since 2009. Shabazz palaces self-released two EPs in 2009 entitled Of Light and Shabazz Palaces. On June 28, 2011, the duo released its debut full-length album entitled Black Up. The album was listed number 1 in Seattle Times music columnist Andrew Matson’s 2011 “Local Top number 10.”
On July 29, 2014, Shabazz Palaces released a sophomore album, Lese Majesty. The duo released its third and fourth full-length records in 2017 entitled, Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star and Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines. The duo joined up with collaborator Erik Blood to release a full-length LP named 1 Time Mirage. The album was released under the moniker Knife Knights.
In 2020, Shabazz Palaces released its fifth full-length album entitled, The Don of Diamond Dreams. The duo has done so many collaborations since they started their careers, including Carlos Overall, Sunny Levine, Porter Ray, The Helio Sequence, Battles, Erik Blood, Stas THEE Boss, and THEESatisfaction Thundercat, and Flying Lotus.
According to Butler, his primary influences as “abstract.” He further attributes the use of African percussion as well as jazz overtones.
