In The Symphony, musicians and audiences work together on a daring and fruitful project to benefit all who value live performance. Their dedication to giving back to the larger Santa Fe community through free cultural outreach activities is as longstanding as their tradition of musical brilliance. Among these programs are concerts in retirement homes and senior centers, mentorship programs in public schools, and free concerts at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.
As a bonus, in 2009 The Symphony began working with the Santa Fe Institute on a series of educational projects titled "Voyages of Discovery" that investigate the connections between science and music. Their collaborations included "Darwin and Mendelssohn," "The Planets," "Bach on the Brain," and "The Majesty of Music and Mathematics." The growing popularity of these gatherings has opened up fresh possibilities for engaging students of all ages across the country and beyond.
The Symphony was founded in 1984 and now features 65 professional musicians and 80+ choristers, all locals to New Mexico. Their artists have appeared with world-renowned ensembles, including the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and they've studied at prestigious institutions like Juilliard and Northwestern. The Symphony has been lauded over the years for its varied repertoire, ranging from well-known masterworks to world premieres by Oscar-winning composers like Elmer Bernstein, Dave Grusin, and Pulitzer Prize winner George Walker.
