Santa Barbara, California, is home to the Santa Barbara Symphony, a professional symphony orchestra and a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. In 1953, the orchestra came into being. The following individuals have served as music directors: Erno Daniel (1960–1967), Ronald Ondrejka (1967–1979), Frank Collura (1979–1984), Varujan Kojian (1985–1993), Gisele Ben-Dor (1994–2005), and Nir Kabaretti (2006–present).
Recordings of the orchestra's performances of pieces by composers like as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Luis Bacalov, Astor Piazzolla, and Silvestre Revueltas were released in the 1990s. A typical season for the orchestra includes seven concerts, with occasional extra performances like a New Year's Eve pop concert and stage show. The Santa Barbara Symphony relocated to the Granada Theatre in 2008 from the Arlington Theatre, where it had performed for many years.
