Sa-Roc Information
Assata Perkins (December 28, 1981) is an American rapper born in Southeast Washington, D.C. Sa-Roc began working with producer Sol Messiah of Atlanta in 2002. Sa-Roc did not begin performing live until a benefit for Mutulu Shakur in 2011, despite having already released CDs. She paid tribute to Troy Davis with the song "Just Us" on her 2013 album, The Book of Light.
Sa-Roc inked a deal with Rhymesayers in May of 2016. She makes her formal Rhymesayers debut on Brother Ali's All the Beauty in This Whole Life album, which features her music. She also went on the Own Light Tour with Brother Ali to support the new album. Her 2018 song "Forever" made its premiere in February. She made her solo debut with the "Goddess Gang" track in October 2018. The track was showcased in Need for Speed Heat, a racing video game released in 2019. The Sharecropper's Daughter, her debut album with Rhymesayers, was released on October 2, 2020.
It was ranked as one of the top fifteen albums of 2020 by The Economist. And She Could Be Next, a 2020 Public Broadcasting Service documentary concerning the Squad, featured the music "Believe" by Sa-Roc. Sa-Roc's favorite musicians include Björk, Billie Holiday, Bad Brains, Outkast, and Nirvana. Sa-Rock, a tribute to the late hip-hop rapper Sha-Rock, and her childhood nickname "Sa Sa" came together to form her moniker.
