Among the several symphony orchestras in the Netherlands, one stands out: the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Its principal location is the De Doelen concert hall. Second only in stature to Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the RPhO is widely regarded as one of the two most illustrious orchestras from the Netherlands. Along with other Dutch ensembles, the RPhO presents symphonic concerts and plays the opera orchestra role in De Nederlandse Opera shows.
Jirí Belohlávek was a principal guest conductor of the RPhO from the 2012–2013 season until his death on May 31, 2017, among other notable conductors. The RPhO was first guest-conducted by Tarmo Peltokoski in May 2022. In light of this performance, the RPhO has announced that Peltokoski joined the orchestra as a principal guest conductor beginning with the 2023–2024 season and continuing for four years. Companies like Deutsche Grammophon, EMI, BIS, and Philips have released commercial recordings by the RPhO.
