Respighi Information
Ottorino Respighi was a prominent figure in early 20th-century Italian music, known for his work as a violinist, teacher, and composer. He lived from 9 July 1879 to 18 April 1936. He wrote choral songs, chamber music, operas, ballets, orchestral suites, and transcriptions of Italian music from the 16th to the 18th centuries. However, his three orchestral tone poems—Fountains of Rome (1916), Pines of Rome (1924), and Roman Festivals (1928)—brought him worldwide fame and are the most performed works of his oeuvre.
A memorial plaque was installed at the birthplace of Respighi on Via Guido Reni in Bologna on 4 March 2000. Attendees included his niece, Luisa Putti, and his great-nieces, Elsa and Gloria Pizzoli. Gloria Pizzoli gave the piano that Respighi used while writing Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome to the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna in 1956. Elsa and Gloria approached Salvatore Di Vittorio, an Italian conductor and composer, in 2006.
In collaboration with Potito Pedarra, an archivist and cataloguer of Respighi's works, Di Vittorio commissioned him to finish several of Respighi's unfinished and unpublished pieces. Included in this was the 1903 Violin Concerto in A major, which had its world debut in 2010 under the baton of Di Vittorio's Chamber Orchestra of New York. The orchestra is performing di Vittorio's continuous new versions of Respighi's work in premieres and recordings on Naxos Records. Di Vittorio paid tribute to Respighi with an orchestral composition titled Overture Respighiana, which debuted in 2008.
