Since their 2002 inception, the four gentlemen of the Rastrelli Cello Quartet have devoted themselves to the study and performance of the cello and its vast sonic landscape. Despite their dedication to the past, they have cut all ties with the status quo, which is, at best, a starting point for innovation. Since then, the group has amassed a vast and original repertoire unmatched by any other group.
Named after the 18th-century architect who designed several landmarks in the city, the quartet's dedication to its hometown of St. Petersburg is evident in the name it picked for its ensemble. This is the first time anyone else has done as much to define the image of this northern Russian city as Bartholomeo Rastrelli.
As a founding member of the quartet, Sergio Drabkin is responsible for practically all of Rastrelli's repertoire of arrangements. Drabkin's sophisticated compositions guide the quartet through an individual and often unexpected musical environment under the supervision of the charismatic virtuoso Kira Kraftzoff.
Mischa Degtjareff and Kirill Timofeev, two of the artistic director's former students and members of the quartet since 2002, bring their distinct personalities, life experiences, and points of view to the table.
The four Rastrelli cellists only perform music they love—that's a matter of absolute conviction when it comes to putting together their programs. The quartet usually treats its audience with a mixture of arrangements of chamber music works, orchestral classics, and standards of cello literature, as well as popular music, jazz, klezmer, or tango.
