Preservation Hall Jazz Band Information
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is a jazz band founded in New Orleans by tuba player Allan Jaffe in the early 1960s. The current lineup consists of Kyle Roussel (piano), Clint Maedgen (vocals and saxophone), Branden Lewis (trumpet), Ronell Johnson (trombone), Walter Harris (drums), Charlie Gabriel (saxophone and clarinet), and Ben Jaffe (double bass and tuba). Preservation Hall in the French Quarter inspired the band's name. Due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hall's doors were closed for a time, but the band continued to tour.
Allan Jaffe hired local musicians ranging in age from the 1960s to the 1990s. Poverty, racism, and disease plagued many people. The Jaffes didn't offer alcohol at first, didn't employ amplification, and didn't advertise. Allan Jaffe began touring with bands in the United States and other countries in 1963. The clarinetist George Lewis, whose name precedes the Hall, was the most popular. Traditional jazz fans from all over the world flocked to New Orleans to hear it.
At the age of fifty-one, Allan Jaffe died of cancer in 1987. In 1993, after his son Ben graduated from Oberlin College, he took over as artistic director. On tour, Ben Jaffe played double bass and tuba with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. He was the one who started his father's educational ambitions.
