Philip Hansen Anselmo (June 30, 1968) is an American heavy metal vocalist. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His family often moved when he was a kid, so he attended many different schools in Louisiana and Texas before graduating from Grace King High School in Metairie. Anselmo's first band was named Samhain, and he and some pals from the neighborhood established it in 1981.
In 2011 and 2012, Anselmo and his band The Illegals collaborated on a solo album, Walk Through Exits Only. July 16, 2013, marked its public debut. The second studio album, Choosing Mental Illness as a Virtue, was announced in October of 2017 and was originally scheduled for release in December before being pushed back to January 26, 2018.
With the release of "Choosing Mental Illness," the first single from the upcoming second album, fans now have the opportunity to hear the entire album. Next was "The Ignorant Point," which came out on December 13, 2017. The album received an 8 out of 10 from Exclaim! Vocalist Anselmo is backed by guitarist Stephen Taylor, drummer Joey Gonzalez, lead guitarist Mike DeLeon, and bassist Derek Engemann.
