Peter Oundjian Information
Peter Oundjian (December 21, 1955) is a Canadian violinist and conductor from Toronto, Ontario. He was educated in England, where he initiated learning the violin at age seven, along with Manoug Parikian. Later, he attended Charterhouse School in Godalming and then the Royal College of Music. Oundjian subsequently studied at the Juilliard School along with Itzhak Perlman, Ivan Galamian, and Dorothy DeLay. He minored in conducting there and later was encouraged in his endeavors when he attended a master class offered by Herbert von Karajan (the eminent Austrian conductor).
Oundjian competed at the International Violin Competition in 1980, where he won First Prize. The event was held in Viña del Mar, Chile. He successfully became the first violinist of the Tokyo String Quartet and enjoyed the post for approximately fourteen years. Oundjian was forced to curtail his instrumental career due to a repetitive stress injury. This made him shift his full-time musical focus to conducting and began working for the Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam from 1998 to 2003 as the Artistic Director.
Oundjian is the Artistic Advisor and Principal Guest Conductor of the Caramoor International Music Festival and was also the Principal Guest Conductor for the Colorado Symphony Orchestra for three years. Oundjian led the Philadelphia Orchestra's "Absolutely Mozart" Festival for four summers and was also announced as the music director for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in January 2003.
Five Days in September: The Rebirth of an Orchestra is a 2005 documentary that follows the first days of Oundjian's first season as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's music director. He later received the Key to the City from Toronto Mayor named John Tory.
