Paragon Ragtime Orchestra Information
When it comes to recreating the syncopated sounds of early musical theater, silent film, and retro dance, no other group can compare to the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra. The PRO was founded when Rick Benjamin uncovered thousands of orchestra scores from the turn of the century that had belonged to Victrola recording sensation Arthur Pryor in 1985.
Alice Tully Hall was the site of the Orchestra's first public performance in 1988, marking the group's premiere as the first orchestra to perform at Lincoln Center. Since then, the Ravinia Festival, the Smithsonian Institution, Chautauqua, the Brucknerhaus (Austria), the New York 92nd Street Y, and the American Dance Festival are just a few of the hundreds of prestigious locations where PRO has performed. Oh You Kid!, created by master choreographer Paul Taylor and premiered at The Kennedy Center by the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Performing Arts in 1999, was influenced by PRO's music.
In June of 2003, the PRO debuted Rick Benjamin's reimagining of Scott Joplin's opera Treemonisha at the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco. The Minnesota Orchestra invited Paragon to perform at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis in 2005 and 2006.
