Omaha Symphony Information
The Omaha Symphony is a professional orchestra that was established in 1921. The symphony performs over 200 concerts in Omaha, Nebraska, on an annual basis and throughout the orchestra's home region. The orchestra is classified among the League of American Orchestras under "Group 2." As it is considered one of the major American symphonies, its annual budget was approximately $7 million in 2012. The Omaha Symphony enjoys a $30 million endowment, while Holland Performing Arts Center is the orchestra's principal venue and home.
The music director of Omaha Symphony was Thomas Wilkins from 2005-2020. He also works as principal guest conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The symphony performed the world premiere of Philip Glass's Piano Concerto No. 2 (After Lewis and Clark) under the then-Music Director Victor Yampolsky in 2002. The Omaha Symphony performs regularly with some of the world's most highly regarded musicians such as Pinchas Zukerman, Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, and Renee Fleming.
Some of the notable season series performed by the Omaha Symphony include SymphonyJoslyn, Family, Movie Music, MasterWorks, SymphonyPops, SymphonyRocks, along with a series of special concerts. Every year, the orchestra tours the Midwest region and reaches an estimated audience of 300,000. The complete orchestra includes 92 musicians and is known for performing a six-concert chamber orchestra series at the Joslyn Art Museum. The symphony's current music director is Ankush Kumar Bahl, who was appointed at the beginning of 2021.
