Ohio Players Information
Ohio Players is a funk band founded in 1959 and originated from Dayton, Ohio. The music of the group is classified as soul, R&B, and funk. The band is also known as The Ohio Untouchables. Its lineup involves many members, including Ronnie "Diamond" Hoard, Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner, Robert "Kuumba" Jones, Ronnie "Diamond" Hoard, Jimmy Sampson, James "Diamond" Williams, Shaun "Shaunie Mac" Dedrick, and many more. The Ohio Players were initially known as a backing group for The Falcons.
"Funky Worm" was the band's first big hit single that reached number 1 on the Billboard R&B chart. The single sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc in May 1973 by RIAA. Between 1973 and 1976, the Ohio Players had seven Top 40 hits, including "Fire," "Love Rollercoaster," "I Want to Be Free," "Skin Tight," "Love Rollercoaster," "Fopp," "Who'd She Coo?", "Sweet Sticky Thing," "Rattlesnake," and "Far East Mississippi."
Ohio Players released many notable studio albums such as Contradiction, Jass-Ay-Lay-Dee, Everybody Up, and Graduation. Ol' School (1996), Jam (1996), and Live 1977 (2013) are three live albums by the band. The group also released a few compilation albums: Greatest Hits, Funk on Fire: The Mercury Anthology, Orgasm: The Very Best of the Westbound Years, and 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection - The Best of Ohio Players. Ohio Players have worked with a few record labels so far, including Arista, Boardwalk, Westbound, Mercury, and Capitol.
