Nubya Garcia Information
Nubya Garcia (1991) is an English bandleader, saxophonist, composer, and jazz musician. She was born in Camden Town, London. She participated in music workshops for young people led by Gary Crosby at the Roundhouse in Camden and with Tomorrow's Warriors. She attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston on full scholarship for a five-week summer program while still a high school student. She spent her gap year learning under Jean Toussaint, a former member of the Jazz Messengers.
Garcia's first release, an EP titled Nubya's 5ive, was released in 2017 on the label Jazz re:freshed. She performed at the New York City Winter Jazz Festival and the Berlin JazzFest the following year after opening for Gilles Peterson at the Worldwide Festival in Sète.
Garcia's 2018 extended play (EP) When We Are investigated the use of electronics in live jazz settings and was funded by the Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award, a joint initiative of the PRS Foundation and the Steve Reid Foundation. She also participates in the Afro-jazz group Maisha and the collective Nérija.
The Love Supreme Jazz Festival and the NN North Sea Jazz Festival are the only UK festivals where Garcia has performed. The gigs she headlined at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club were completely sold out. Since last November, Garcia has been a regular guest DJ on NTS Radio for one month each month.
