The Northwestern Wildcats women's basketball program competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The university participates in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Welsh-Ryan Arena is the home court for the Wildcats basketball team in Evanston, Illinois. However, due to repairs at Welsh-Ryan Arena, the 2017-18 season was played at Beardsley Gym on the Evanston Township High School campus.
June Olkowski took over as coach for five years before being let go because the Wildcats consistently finished in last place or lower under her watch, and she never led the team to more than three conference victories. Beth Combs was hired to coach the Wildcats in 2004. However, she was sacked after four seasons, highlighted with winning only seven conference games in 4 years and placing in at least 10th place.
For the 2008 campaign, the team hired Joe McKeown. After finishing 10th in his first year, they improved to a tie for 8th in the conference the following year, their greatest finish since the 1998 season and a WNIT berth. The Wildcats made their first trip back to the NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament since 1997 in 2015, a season in which they finished as high as they had since 1994 in the league standings.
