The Northern Iowa Panthers women's basketball team competes in NCAA Division I basketball games. It plays for the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. At this time, the Missouri Valley Conference counts UNI among its members.
Beginning in 1968, the women's basketball program at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) entered its contemporary era of competition. These early UNI teams were coached by Wanda Green from 1968 to 1978. the third, Sandra Williamson, UNI's head coach from 1978 to 1980, was in charge of the team's relocation to the UNI Dome.
Former Panthers head coach Tanya Warren has been with the UNI women's basketball program since 2007. In her sixteen years at the helm, Warren has guided the squad to twelve trips to the playoffs. 2010, under Warren's leadership, the Panthers qualified for the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament for the first time.
After defeating Missouri State on March 4, 2017, Tanya Warren moved to 184 victories for her UNI women's basketball career, becoming the program's all-time wins leader. Warren has been recognized as the best coach in the Missouri Valley Conference three times.
The UNI women's basketball team won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title in 2011 and the tournament title in 2010 and 2011 when Warren was their coach.
