Modesto Symphony Orchestra Information
Frank Mancini, Malin Langstroth, and Leonard Fristrom formed the Modesto Symphony Orchestra (MSO) in 1931, working with local leaders to establish a cultural center point. The MSO used to present performances in churches, high schools, and colleges, with soloists from the orchestra. Professional soloists and community choirs joined the MSO as the orchestra grew.
The MSO became a professional orchestra in 1977. Therefore the 1970s and 1990s were a period of change. Pops concerts, the founding of the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra in 1976, and the first Picnic at the Pops in 1994 were all new developments. The Modesto Symphony Orchestra Chorus was formed in 2001, and it became a resident company of the Gallo Center for the Arts when it opened its doors in 2007. In 2017, the Modesto Symphony Youth Chorus was formed.
The Modesto Symphony continues to seek to improve and enhance the community by providing high-caliber music and encouraging lifelong music education and appreciation. The 91st season of the Symphony will feature our Music Director candidates in 2021-22.
