Derek Ryan Smith (March 10, 1987) is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He is professionally known as Mod Sun. He was born in Bloomington, Minnesota. Sun began attending concerts in his teenage. He was in eighth grade when Sun designed merchandise for bands. He joined the first pop-punk band of his career called Sideline Heroes. During his sophomore year of high school, Sun started playing drums for a local punk band, the Semester. He joined the post-hardcore band Four Letter Lie in 2004.
Mod Sun has released three extended plays and five mixtapes so far in his solo career. His music style has been described as “hippy hop.” On March 10, 2015, he released his debut album entitled, Look Up/ The album was released through Rostrum Records, peaking at number 1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. His second studio album, Movie, was released on March 10, 2017. The album reached number 16 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. On November 10, 2017, Mod Sun released his third album, BB.
In early 2020, Mod Sun announced that he had started working on his fourth studio album. The lead single from the album entitled “Karma” was released on October 30, 2020. His fourth album, Internet Killer the Rockstar, was released on February 12, 2021.
Notable singles of the Mod Sun’s career are “My Hippy,” “Pound on the Way,” “We Do This Shit,” “Beautiful Problem,” “Runaway,” “Burning Up,” “Tell Me All Your Secrets,” and “I Remember Way Too Much.”
