The Mobile Symphony Orchestra is a symphonic orchestra located in Mobile, Alabama. The current music director for the orchestra is Scott Speck. The Mobile Symphony Orchestra has seven concert seasons that run from September to May every year. A season typically consists of six traditional classical concerts and one-holiday concert.
In November, the symphonic orchestra’s annual traditions include Blue Jeans and Beethoven, whereas Holiday is revealed in December. The orchestra has performed repertoire from all the notable musical periods, styles and has hosted many notable artists such as Renee Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma.
The Mobile Symphony Orchestra has its roots back in 1970 with the establishment of Symphony Concerts of Mobile. There was a plan to develop a full-time, professional orchestra that would permanently reside in Mobile by the board in 1996. The company changed its name to “Mobile Symphony, Inc.” in 1997, which provided support for the first concert season. The company acquired a building in 2002 under the leadership of Mayor Michael Dow. The group also has a connection to the Mobile Saenger Theater, where the orchestra performs its concerts.
