Mischa Maisky Information
Mischa Maisky (January 10, 1948) is a Soviet-born Israeli cellist. He is the younger brother of organist, harpsichordist, and musicologist Valery Maisky. From 1966 to 1970 was taught by Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory. Mischa Maisky won a sixth place at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1966, held in Moscow. Maisky was arrested in 1907 and spent 18 months in a work camp. Later, in 1972, Mischa Maisky emigrated to Israel, where he holds citizenship. Currently, he is living in Belgium though he has studied in Los Angeles with Gregor Piatigorsky.
Mischa Maisky has worked with many well-known artists including the pianists Martha Argerich, Radu Lupu, Nelson Freire, Peter Serkin, Evgeny Kissin, Khatia Buniatishvili, Lang Lang and Sergio Tiempo, the violinists Vadim Repin, Maxim Vengerov, Joshua Bell, Gidon Kremer, Itzhak Perlman, Julian Rachlin, and Janine Jansen, and the conductors Carlo Maria Giulini, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Muti, Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Levine, Charles Dutoit, Mariss Jansons, and Valery Gergiev to name a few.
Maisky first performed in the USA in 1973, at Carnegie Hall. His first performance in London took place in 1976, where he performed a recital with Radu Lupu. In 1995, he returned to Russia and recorded with Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra. He also has performed with his children Sascha, a violinist, and Lily Maisky, a classical pianist.
