Mint Julep Jazz Band Information
The Mint Julep Jazz Band, consisting of four horns, a rhythm section, and a vocalist, performs arrangements based on vintage jazz and swing recordings as well as original compositions that evoke the sound of the 1920s, 1930s, and early 1940s.
Trombonist Lucian Cobb and vocalist/swing DJ Laura Windley have combined their extensive knowledge and appreciation of swing music to form the Durham, North Carolina-based Mint Julep Jazz Band. The Mint Julep Jazz Band was established in the fall of 2011 to meet the musical demands of the growing Triangle area swing dance community. The band's members are current and past faculty and students from North Carolina's thriving jazz programs.
After being "discovered" at a wedding in 2012, the band recorded an original tune for Sesame Street that featured Jon Hamm of Mad Men fame and made its television debut on April 18, 2013. The Lincoln Center Midsummer Night Swing concert series featured the ensemble in 2016. The Mint Julep Jazz Band has continued playing for swing dancers all over the United States, from New York to Los Angeles to Austin and everywhere.
