Mephiskapheles Information
Mephiskapheles is a ska band of Andre A. Worrell, Adam Bower, Michael Bitz, Wayne Dunton, Brian Martin, Greg Robinson, Greg Lapine, and Eric Molina. Brendan Tween, a guitarist, and Mikal Reich, a drummer from New York City's East Village, formed the band after their previous band, New York hardcore act The Shaved Pigs, disbanded. Skatterbrains came together over the next year with the help of several close friends, most notably keyboardist Brian "Underpants" Martin.
A different band had already claimed the name, so they changed it to Mephiskapheles. And, as Reich had labeled it when the founders discovered a new "lower calling." Creating the first Satanic Ska band ever. The band's debut performance occurred at Ugo's, a bar in Locust Valley, New York, on January 3, 1991. After a lineup change resulted in Andre A. Worrell (as The Nubian Nightmare) taking center stage, the band produced its four-song debut, named The DEMOn, which was only available as a cassette tape.
Doomsday, Eskamoes, Dansmenot, and a rendition of the ska standard Shame & Scandal were among the tracks featured on the tape. The cassette was a big smash on ska, punk, and college radio before the term "viral" was even coined. In New York, the song "Doomsday" was also frequently heard on television as the background music for a commercial for a gym.
