MC Lyte Information
MC Lyte (October 11, 1970) is an American rapper, entrepreneur, actress, and DJ. She was born in New York City. A member of the hip-hop duo Audio Two, she considers Milk Dee and DJ Giz "absolutely like [her] brothers" due to their shared upbringing. Their dad, Nat Robinson, founded a record company named First Priority to promote Audio Two. Having made the label, Robinson made a deal with Atlantic on the condition that Lyte also signs a record deal with the company.
With "I Cram to Understand U (Sam)," one of the earliest songs about the crack period, Lyte released her first single in 1987 at 16. When she composed that song, she was only 12 years old. In May 1988, MTV premiered a remix of Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor's "I Want Your (Hands on Me)" with Lyte as a featured guest. In January of 1989, Lyte, along with Boogie Down Productions, Public Enemy, and Heavy D, became involved with the Stop the Violence Movement. In response to the violence in the hip-hop and African American communities, they collaborated on the single "Self Destruction," released in late 1996.
The revenues from the song's first week on Billboard Hot Rap Singles were given to the National Urban League. DJ K-Rock, a cousin of MC Lyte's named Kennith Moorer, has been with her on the road from the beginning of her career. She also had two dancers named Leg One and Leg Two, who appeared in her videos and live performances at the time.
