Maze Information
Maze is an American soul band. The current lineup consists of Frankie Beverly, Carl Wheeler, Ordeen Mays Jr., Vernon Black, Larry Wims, Kevin Lloyd, Kevin Stancil, and Marlon Curry. In 1970, Frankie Beverly formed Raw Soul. They released a few singles on the independent Gregar label but could have been more successful. The band was an instant hit after a few key personnel changes, a move from Philadelphia to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1971, and the addition of Marvin Gaye.
A compilation of Maze's greatest songs was released in 2009. The album is a tribute to Maze and is titled Silky Soul Music. It included contemporary artists covering Maze's greatest hits, with Maze serving as a backing band, and featured Frankie Beverly. As the band has frequently performed in all-white clothes, it has become customary for the audience to follow suit in recent years.
McKinley "Bug" Williams, their percussionist and backing singer, passed away on September 2, 2011, likely from a heart attack. Former members of the band Maze, including founding member Roame, announced their departure and formation of a new band called "The Music Forever" (TMF): Formerly of Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly on May 9, 2023. New members of the Maze band have joined Beverly onstage.
