Mathieu Dufour Information
French flautist Mathieu Dufour served as the Berlin Philharmonic's main flautist. Dufour picked up the flute at the age of eight. At the Lyon Conservatory in Lyon, France, he studied under Madeleine Chassang and Maxence Larrieu. Before holding the same post with the Paris National Opera in 1996, Dufour was appointed principal flute of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse in 1993. He uses a Yamaha YFL-997 flute to perform.
In 1999, Daniel Barenboim named Dufour the lead flute of the Chicago Symphony. Although he later claimed he had joined them on a one-year trial basis and was permitted to hold roles with both orchestras, he briefly left in September 2009 to perform principal flute with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In January 2010, he would eventually return to Chicago. In August 2015, he joined the Berlin Philharmonic as principal flute, sharing the position with Emmanuel Pahud as Andreas Blau retired.
