Mary Gauthier Information
Mary Veronica Gauthier (March 11, 1962) is an American folk singer and songwriter born in New Orleans, Louisiana. After Gauthier was arrested once for drunk driving, she has since dedicated herself full-time to the songwriting. She had decided to pursue a music career, and at the age of 35, she wrote her first song. Her debut album entitled “Dixie Kitchen” was released in 1997. She owned a share in a restaurant which she sold in 1998 to finance her second album entitled “Drag Queens in Limousines.” The release was successful, and Gauthier received an invitation to play at 11 major folk festivals.
Gauthier has worked with a few record labels throughout her careers, such as Lost Highway, In the Black, Proper Records, and Signature Sounds. She released her third album in 2002 entitled “Filth and Fire.” The album was named “Best Indy CD of the year” by The New York Times’ Jon Pareles. Gauthier also wrote short stories that have been published in several magazines and books, including “Amplified,” a release by Random House, and The Blue Rock Review. She has also been featured with her own chapters in several books on both Americana and country music.
Gauthier is a regular participant of the Grand Ole Opry. Currently, she is writing a book about the Art of Songwriting. Her notable albums include Mercy Now (2005), Between Daylight and Dark (2007), Genesis (2008), The Foundling (2010), The Foundling Alone (2011), and Live at Blue Rock (2012).
