The Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, also known as the Mariinsky Orchestra, was formerly known as the Kirov Orchestra. Mariinsky Orchestra itself was founded in 1783 while the reign of Catherine the Great was going on. Before the revolution, it was known as the Russian Imperial Opera Orchestra. The orchestra is also known as one of the oldest musical institutions that are available in Russia.
The name of the orchestra was changed by Joseph Stalin in 1935 to Kirov, after Sergei Kirov, the very first secretary that came from the Communist Party in Leningrad. In 1934, she was murdered by his regime, Stalin. The Soviet Union collapsed, and after this happened, the name of the orchestra was changed back to Mariinsky.
Currently, the artistic and the general director of the Mariinsky Theatre is Valery Gergiev, who is also known as the conductor. The principal guest conductor for The Mariinsky Orchestra is Nikolaj Znaider. The Theatre Orchestra has become one of the leading symphony orchestras in Russia under Gergiev.
