Malika Tirolien is a Montreal-based singer, pianist, and songwriter. She was born in Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe. Tirolien's parents noticed that she had an early passion for music and singing, so they enrolled her in piano classes. At age 8, she accompanied her father's band on their first studio recording. She began singing seriously at a young age, naming Michael Jackson a major inspiration.
Tirolien emigrated to Canada in 2001, at the age of 18, to study music at the University of Montreal. Tirolien studied abroad in France in 2005 after completing a Bachelor of Arts in jazz interpretation. After moving back to Montreal, she attended a Kalmunity Vibe Collective talk. Tirolien and his other collective members later went on to form the band Groundfood.
Tirolien sang the major part in La Nouba, a Cirque du Soleil performance, in Orlando, Florida, in 2012 and 2013. Michael League, the leader of the American band Snarky Puppy, saw her perform and offered her band, Groundfood, to open for them at a show in New York. After that, she began working closely with League. Tirolien released her first self-titled album, Sur La Voie Ensoleillée, in June 2014.
