Mahalia Information
Mahalia Burkmar (May 1, 1998) is a British actress, singer, and songwriter. She was born in Syston, United Kingdom. She started at Roundhill Community College, but after signing a record deal at 13, she enrolled at the Birmingham Ormiston Academy, where she studied acting. She penned her first song when she was eight and earned a record deal with Asylum Records when she was thirteen.
She gave her first live performance when she was "eleven, or maybe 12" at an open mic. In 2012, she dropped her first EP, "Head Space." After meeting Ed Sheeran, Mahalia went on to play as an opening act for him and even recorded a duet of "Gold Rush" with him. In 2014, she toured the UK as an opening act for Sheeran and Emeli Sandé. In 2015, she contributed vocals to the title track from Rudimental's UK number-one album, We the Generation.
In 2019, BBC Radio 1's Brit List highlighted Mahalia. Her first album, Love and Compromise, came out and was promoted as such. When Mahalia was young, her mother watched an interview with Eartha Kitt. This experience sparked the idea for the album. At the 2020 MOBO Awards, Mahalia earned the gold for Best Female Act and Best R&B/Soul Act. Mahalia performed in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
