Madison's Overture Hall is one of two theaters in the city's Overture Center for the Arts, and it was donated by M.S.O. supporters Jerome and Pleasant Rowland Frautschi. The Frautschis' donation was so big that it exceeded the "National Endowment for the Arts" budget, making it one of the largest grants ever given to the performing arts by a single donor in the United States. Their contribution sparked a new round of funding for the arts nationwide.
The magnificent "Overture Concert Organ," built for the Overture Center by renowned organ builder Johannes Klais of Bonn, Germany, is just one of the many reasons why Overture Hall is considered "one of the acoustically finest halls in America" by performers, conductors, and producers from around the world. The Klais organ weighs in at a whopping 20 tons, making it the heaviest mobile thing in any American theater. It is stored away and brought out on a pair of railroad lines.
