Benjamin Hammond Haggerty (June 19, 1983) is an American rapper and songwriter known by his stage name Macklemore. He was formerly known as Professor Macklemore and is a native of Seattle, Washington. Macklemore interacted with hip-hop for the first time when he was only six and started to write lyrics at 15. He shared his major influences: Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, Nas, Hieroglyphics, Freestyle Fellowship, Aceyalone, Living Legends, and Talib Kweli.
Haggerty was interested in reaching a younger generation with the help of his music. He went to Garfield High School and then to Nathan Hale High School, where he came up with his stage name "Professor Macklemore." Under this name, he recorded a mixtape titled Open Your Eyes in 2000. The album was self-released on October 21, 2000. It was followed by his first official full-length album, The Language of My World (January 1, 2005).
He also appeared in popular films, including Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? in 2020. Some of his notable studio albums are Gemini (2017) and Ryan Lewis's The Heist (2012), along with This Unruly Mess I've Made (2016). Macklemore and Australian musician Tones and I dropped a new single titled "Chant" on July 22, 2022. His follow-up album, Ben, came out on February 24, 2023.
Macklemore is a massive supporter of the Seattle Kraken of the NHL, and on April 18, 2022, it was reported that Macklemore had purchased a minority stake in the team.
