Lubbock Symphony Orchestra Information
William A. Harrod led a volunteer initiative known as the LSO in 1946. When Harrod arrived in Lubbock, he was an Air Force Band member. He started a dance band for the enlistees stationed in Lubbock, and the preachers in the area requested him to start a community orchestra. Switching to a full orchestra is necessary as there is nowhere to find trained string players.
The orchestra "got its largest blessing: (violist) Virginia Kellogg," according to Harrod. In his opinion, she changed the music's tone, making it seem more like an orchestra. Success and community support led to the LSO's transformation into a professional orchestra in 1967. With this change, fresh musical and directing talent emerged. David Cho is the current music director and conductor.
The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra now features soloists and conductors of national renown. Additionally, the professional musicians and full-time administrative staff collaborate with the neighborhood schools, play with the symphony, and engage in community outreach.
